I am so glad you are here and asking such a thought-provoking question! It is hard to know because alcohol use is so normalized in our society! It is prevalent in what we watch, what we see on social media, and often used by the people in our lives.
Here are some things to consider that may be indicative of a problem with alcohol:
· Do you ever drink more than you intended to? You tell yourself you are only going to have one or two drinks tonight and end up drinking far more.
· Have you tried to cut back or stop and couldn’t?
· Do you ever have a strong urge to drink?
· Do you find yourself thinking about drinking throughout the day?
· Have you realized that drinking is causing issues in your relationships, your work, or your health, but you continue to drink anyways?
· Do you ever have withdrawal symptoms like nausea, sweating, or shaking?
· Has anyone close to you expressed concern about your alcohol use?
It’s easy to have denial in this area of our lives because it is so normalized in our society. If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you likely have developed a problem with alcohol. This realization may be scary, but there is so much help available. You do not have to tackle this alone!
Only 8% of people with alcohol use disorder ever reach out for help. Please don’t be in the 92% that suffer in silence. According to the CDC excessive drinking is a leading cause of preventable death each year. Alcohol use can cause several types of cancer, liver disease, and heart disease. On average people die 26 years prematurely due to the damage alcohol does on their bodies.
